Description: This plant is one I truly strived to get, and for several years! I was looking to create the "biggest, most comical gold daylily possible"... to name for my Golden Retriever, Jason. Jason was forever by my side, a bit obsessed with what I was digging in the dirt so much for... and waiting for me to toss small rocks to the side, so he could retrieve 'em. A sweetheart of a dog, who totally won my heart... yet died WAY too soon, and not in a "good" way (as if there is one, I guess). Jason had a very weird trick, that EVERYONE who knew us was aware of... his "Now Go Hide" show! He'd bring something (anything), give it to you, then wait for you to say "now go hide!"... and he'd do just that. If that wasn't funny enough, he'd hide behind really small things... like a patio chairleg or something. He actually thought we couldn't see his 110lb golden ass sticking out, while he was breathlessly silent! Of course, it was your turn to throw whatever he brought you... and he'd come running out to save the day! The whole thing was just TOO HILARIOUS! I still miss Jason horribly, but thank God I could still see him in his son (Ben) and grandson (Samson). There's already a nice clump of "Now Go Hide" on Jason's grave, here in my garden... where he lived his entire life, devoted to me completely.
Though I was after gold, it turned out TRUE "gold" is a VERY hard color to achieve in daylilies... it's actually a perfect blend of orange and yellow that one has to get, and nearly all results lean too far one way or another. THIS flower was EXACTLY what I wanted in form and performance, and because it's a reverse bitone that does indeed have darker gold sepals... it was a GO!!! Besides... the golden sepals remind me of Jason's ears! I'm ELATED with this plant, for what should be quite obvious reasons!
I'd also like to pay a little tribute to Paul Downie here, who created "Bee's Big Ben" (this plant's mom). That plant was the most incredible bright/light yellow "extra large" I'd grown here EVER (at least until now!), and the true foundation for this new plant.
2021: I've forever been limited on this amazing plant, and therefore the price has remained pretty high (as I gaurded it with my life). I'm only dropping it as much as I have, because I have to make room for this plant's kid! "Solicious" (Owen, 2021) does this parent PROUD, just like Jason did... with Ben, and then Sammy!
