Description: Well, if I’m going to introduce a “spider”… then it’d better be a REALLY cool one, ‘eh?
Indeed, this is a first for me! I’ve never been personally fond of spiders, as the segments are so narrow that it’s hard to see them from afar. I’ve always loved their form though, so it wasn’t until several generations of trying to stretch unusual form flowers to larger dimensions did THIS happen. Because of that background, this one adds in “unusual form/cascade” to its long list of liquid credits.
The deep red/wine color (on segments that are wider than most spiders are) against the sharply triangular green throat is noticeable enough… but add in a darker eye to demark that transition, as well as a stiped midrib? NOT gonna be missed, that’s for sure.
WELL beyond that visual whack (even from a distance) however, is the plant habit itself – or actual presentation OF these massive girls “on the go”. Often at eye level, the blooms are borne on scapes that are ridiculously well branched (5-6 way) and budded (over 40 not uncommon).
As you might guess with such stature, this plant can get "overloaded" with bloom its first year in situ... so be mindful to keep it clean of dead blooms (live heading, even better). Were it not for that consideration, this hottie would be far pricier - it's THAT cool, and WORTH IT!
