Daylily: Burning Curiosity

I must admit, I can't be too surprised to have come up with such a burly attention-getter like this... from crossing two AMAZING "Giant" performers such as "Ken Can Do" and "Dreamliner"! I've been ALL about plant habit for 25 years already, and with so many performers to choose from in the seedling beds at this point (making the "Giant" designation pretty much a given for ALL the newbies these days), the winners are the ones with the best color saturation and form in their blooms.

Taking cues from thousands of other types of plants I grow here has really opened my eyes as to what color wavelengths truly command attention. It was a type of Amaranth called "Early Splendor", which with its glowing terminal growth, gave me the idea of mixing clear red daylilies with hot pinks... resulting in a line which created "Dreamliner". Adding that to the purple-based (and award winning) "Ken Can Do"? WOW - whatta result here!

While I've long since decided that unique color clarity of the blooms is more important (in a garden) to me than intricate designs/features (that one needs to be closer than 24" to appreciate)... the fact that digital color processors aren't yet capable of understanding color layers in the way the human eye can... plays havoc with my trying to portray the true reality of searing color that these new kids really pack. The photos I have here are pretty accurate, but I think you'll see what I mean in the video (below) - where the depth of color that's supplied by a hint of purple is missing. Researching new cameras as we speak, but I swear, I'm tryin' my best here!

I picked "Burning Curiosity" for #19-041 as a tribute to all those who understand the feeling of wanting to know "everything"... about "everything". Both a gift AND a curse, there's still no doubt that finding answers to truly meaningful questions is incredibly fulfilling... just like this plant is, for me (and with luck, YOU as well!).
