Description: AHS HM Cultivar Award Winner, 2018!
Holy Moly... someone get an extinguisher! For SURE this baby looks explosive! VERY dark blood-red (with a slight cast of chocolate brown)... yet retains a very dynamic and large lighter eyewash (on both petals and sepals). This flower is very unusual, in that it undergoes an actual pigment change during the course of the day. The entire flower appears to have been "smoked", which is amazing to watch! I've tried to show this in the sequence of photos above: First two (very red) are "early day". Then a darker color ensues, with changes in eyewash pattern (photo with woodchips behind the fllower). Finally, the "smokey thing" happens... and by day's end, it has a very unusual color. Some call this trait "color changer". I just call it "cool"! Whatever... the fact is that a LOT of Garden Judges felt it's an award worthy plant. At the very least... I must admit, it's "slightly different"!
Watch your knickers... this hot-head might just catch 'em on fire if you're not payin' it attention!
